MAGGIE CECCHIN

'Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.' Pablo Picasso

You know when you do something you love and forget about time and space, absorbed by the very essence of that moment ... when I paint this is where I am. However, for me, this experience came after a long career as a health professional and academic. When (encouraged by reading the children's book 'The Dot' that revealed everyone had a creative spirit) I first picked up a paint brush, it was with not without f and a trembling hand. After many hours exploring the relationship of brush, paint, surface and colour I discovered the joy of painting and determined to follow this passion ... this became a new life for me.

I work conceptually and abstractly, often with tongue in cheek, to create moments of fantasy, enjoyment and distraction. My work evolves intuitively with subjects and imagery emerging from life experience and memory; I quote freely from personal photographs, diverse sources of pattern, and the rich supply of published and web based imagery. I develop my work in projects or series, varying mediums and changing from technique-orientated representational work to more meditative abstract painting because variety keeps my work fresh.

Overall, my work is happy. My goal is to create art that will engage and evoke the viewer, after the initial impact of the image I want to draw them to linger, explore and enjoy the work. My hope is that viewers will be moved to bring their history, to tell their stories and enrich their lives. My art is not complete until it is experienced by the viewer.
