RICHARD MUSGRAVE-EVANS

Richard Musgrave-Evans was born in Melbourne in 1968 and grew up in Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula. He is a self taught, fulltime professional artist now residing in South Australia. Over the years, Richard has developed a style and mobile studio which enable him to work large scale, first hand whilst in remote parts of the country. He says, ‘working in the landscape is not the same as studio work. The energy, isolation and insignificance of man’s presence are strongly and hauntingly felt’.

Richard feels this gives the work a direct message to the viewer of the artist's struggle with the beauty and fear of this unforgiving and ancient landscape. The studio trailer Richard has built allows him to take up to 20 large stretched linens in to the field and store the wet oil paintings while they dry. This enables him to spend extended periods of time to absorb and relay his personal interpretation of the landscape.

Richard’s paintings are created in one sitting with speed and energy before the feeling and moment is lost. Working with large, loaded palette knives and brushes and being so immersed in the subject creates a vibrant, one-off quality in his work.
